This guy caught us a bit by surprise, identifying himself as what he was -- weed sprayer.

May 12 & 13, 2007

After a morning workout hike in the Shenandoah I headed down off the mountains to see what railroad action I could catch. Approaching Luray I received info of a Northbound 38Q and its opposite, Southbound 37Q, both headed my way.

Spring is here and that means chores. We were on the roof of the station but with camera nearby so as not to miss the likes of this Northbound #227

Down off the roof for lunch in Berryville, VA, and to catch this Southbound 11R

After Berryville we decided to see CSX action a bit farther North at Shenandoah Junction, WV

#376 Eastbound coming through the crossover under a dark sky.

The dark skies followed us back to Boyce where I shot this Southbound #203 coming into town

36Q Northbound
5:33pm

#16T was coming North and I should have been ready but I wasn't. As the Main Street crossing gates came down I found myself in the wrong position with the wrong lens.

The result wasn't bad though.

The final chore for the day was to dispose of a large pile of brush. Well, we had an idea and trains cooperated as did this Northbound #204.

For this Northbound #212 I moved farther back and used a different angle and lens to "tighten" things up and capture the headlight through the operator's bay window.

We were a bit puzzled at first by how "blurred" the headlight trail was. Then it occurred to me: the heat from the flame! DUH!!!

Nifty how "serendipity" works. I knew a Southbound #213 was coming but nearly didn't bother because I hadn't thought about how to shoot it. I set my camera just in time and caught this -- I like it the best of all that night!

Snow melting off the station roof and platform adds contrast to the clear air at Point of Rocks, Maryland.

A bit contrasty and distorted by the wide angle lens, but, I like the shot.
I guess I have to play with it in Photoshop a bit.

I've never seen a "flock" of Turkey Buzzards until this afternoon. While waiting on a track inspector to clear (he was causing quite a bottleneck) I noticed these black specks circling to the East. As they moved overhead and my estimate was well over a hundred. Hmmmm, I guess I should've looked around for Alfred Hitchcock. ;)
